Purnima Tanuku OBE, Chief Executive, National Day Nurseries Association
Purnima works closely with ministers and civil servants and represents NDNA and the sector. Purnima’s career spans across public, private and voluntary sectors and she has served as a non executive director in a number of organisations.

Sarah Teather MP, Minister of State for the Department of Education
Sarah Teather has been an MP since September 2003, representing Brent East until the 2010 General Election, when she was elected as the first MP for the newly-created constituency of Brent Central. When elected to Parliament, Sarah was the youngest MP in Britain. She has previously served as Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Community and Local Government, Education, and Housing.

Tim Gill, leading thinker on childhood and author
Tim Gill is one of the UK’s leading thinkers on childhood. His research, writing and consultancy work focuses on children’s play and free time, and has a real, positive impact on children’s everyday lives. His influential book No Fear: Growing up in a risk-averse society was published in 2007. He has also written for the Guardian, Independent and trade and academic publications, and appears regularly on radio and television. Tim blogs at his website, www.rethinkingchildhood.com.

Professor Tanya Byron, psychologist, author and broadcaster
Professor Tanya Byron is a consultant clinical psychologist specialising in child and adolescent mental health. She has an NHS career spanning twenty years working in many areas of mental health; currently her clinics run two days per week.

Tanya broadcasts on TV and radio (Little Angels; House of Tiny Tearaways; Am I Normal?; All in the Mind). She has a weekly column in The Times and The Saturday Times and a monthly column in Good Housekeeping.

Tanya has authored three books on parenting and has edited an encyclopaedia of child development in the early years.

Tam Fry FRSA, Honorary Chairman, Child Growth Foundation & Spokesperson, National Obesity Forum
Tam Fry has been the Honorary Chairman of the Child Growth Foundation since its inception in 1977. He is passionate about the need to prevent children from becoming challenged by either height or obesity by addressing their root causes. As CEO of the Foundation, the UK’s leading charity for children with growth-related problems he has spearheaded the introduction of growth assessment and BMI charts in the United Kingdom.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, Co-Director of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit.
John is a Detective Chief Superintendent with Strathclyde Police, a force of over 10,000 officers and staff covering central Scotland including the city of Glasgow. He has been a police officer for over 38 years working mostly as a Detective. He was an instructor at the Scottish Police College. He has been involved in various roles in the investigation of serious crime and in particular as senior investigating officer in murder inquiries. He was, until 2004, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Department (Operations) with direct responsibility for the force Serious Crime Squad and Fraud Squad. He was a Licensed Hostage Negotiator and was responsible within the force for all matters relating to abduction.

Sarah Carr OBE, NDNA Chair of Trustees
Sarah has chaired the Board since 2001 and was the founder of Kindercare, a group of large nurseries in the North West. Sarah believes strongly that the involvement of members is crucial to the success of NDNA and its ability to represent the sector.

Courteney Donaldson MRICS - Director and Head of Child Centric Sectors, Christie + Co
Courteney has acted for many of the UK’s national and regional nursery groups, and has been involved in a number of large corporate nursery portfolio transactions. Courteney also works with a wide range clients that operate in other childcare and education sectors, including SEN schools, children’s homes, independent schools and foster care businesses.

Jez Ashberry, Shooting Star PR
Jez Ashberry trained as a journalist and worked in newspapers and magazines for seven years before setting up and running the press and media relations office at the new University of Lincoln. For the past five years he has run Shooting Star PR, a PR agency based in Lincoln which has worked extensively in public relations for childcare and early years organisations. Jez currently handles the PR account for Sarah Steel at The Old Station Nursery and has also worked for Mary Barlow at The Totem Pole in Grantham and the annual early years exhibition Childcare Expo. www.shootingstar-pr.co.uk

Aimee Jennings-Burton and Rachael Barrett, KIDS
KIDS is a charity which, in its 40 years, has pioneered a number of approaches and programmes which have included Home Learning (Portage), Parent Partnerships, Adventure Playgrounds and the inclusion of disabled children in mainstream settings.

KIDS has 9 regions and their work falls into several categories, direct work with disabled children and young people, support for parents and siblings, and training information and support for professionals and organisations.

The manager is Aimee Jennings-Burton and the Senior Practitioner is Rachael Barrett. They are both graduate leaders and have completed their BA Honours in Early Childhood Studies combined with their specialism of Inclusive Studies. Their experiences have included a variety of roles in private day nurseries and Children Centres as early years practitioners and family support workers.

Professor Kathy Sylva OBE, University of Oxford
Kathy Sylva is Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Oxford, Department of Education. She is one of the leaders of the DCSF research on effective pre-school, primary and secondary education (EPPSE) and on the evaluations of the Graduate Leader Fund and the Early Learning Partnership Project. She was specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education in 2000-2001 and again in 2005-2009. She was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to children and families.

Sophie Faber, Team Leader, Department for Education
Sophie currently leads on policy development for the new two year old early education entitlement at the Department for Education. In past roles in the Department she has worked on increasing take-up amongst disadvantaged families of the free entitlement, children’s centre funding and community cohesion. She has also spent 9 months working in the children’s services department of the charity Barnardo’s.

Jo Baranek, Lead Early Years Advisor, NDNA
Jo has worked in childcare for over ten years, having experience both as a nursery manager and an Ofsted inspector. She now works as Lead early Years Advisor for NDNA providing ongoing childcare support and advice for nurseries including supporting settings to complete NDNA’s e-Quality Counts scheme, development of publications and factsheets and offering individual support for members.

Antony Lee, National Training Manager, NDNA
Antony's
role at NDNA is to identify and steer development and delivery of a varied portfolio of training programmes,projects and contracts on a national level.This also includes managing the delivery of accredited, non accredited and endorsed programmes to support the development of the early years workforce across England, Wales and Scotland. Antony has first hand experience of the early years sector, through his continued ownership of two successful private day nurseries in West Yorkshire

mary barlow

Mary Barlow, early years trainer and consultant
Mary is an early years consultant and trainer offering a unique approach to training that is lively, practical and hands on. With a professional background in nursery nursing she has worked across the private, public and voluntary sectors, including management roles in Barnardo’s and Sure Start programmes. She is the founder of The Totem Pole, a dedicated Early Years training and resource centre in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and has recently won Trainer of the Year in the 2011 Nursery World Awards.
